The OpenStreetMap Project 2007-09-08

Last week I went to an meeting organised by the ILUG (Irish Linux User Group). It was about an open mapping project called OpenStreetMap, I thought that the CycleRecorder project would be of interest. The main idea behind the OpenStreetMap project is to collection geographic data using a community process like Wikipedia, this data can then be used to create street maps or other map related resources.

At the meeting I showed the prototype board and the GPS module I was using with it. We didn't spend that much time talking about the CycleRecorder project, but from the quick chat I think it was well received and might be useful for future mapping tasks. Another meeting is in the works for later in the year, I hope to be able to show a working version then.
